Chapter 8 Outline
- Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat
- During 3rd year of King Belshazzar's reign
- In vision, Daniel saw himself in the citadel of Susa
- in province of Elam
- beside the Ulai Canal
- he saw a RAM
- w/ 2 horns - long horns
- one was longer than the other but it grew up later
- standing beside the canal
- the ram charged toward the west, north and south
- no animal could stand against it
- none could rescue from it's power
- it did as it please
- it became great
- As thinking about this - he saw a GOAT
- suddenly a goat w/ a prominent horn came
- the horn was between the eyes
- it came from the west
- it crossed the whole earth without touching the ground
- it came toward the 2 horned ram
- and charged it w/ great rage
- a furious attack
- it shattered the rams 2 horns
- The RAM
- horns were shattered by the goat
- was powerless to stand against goat
- goat knocked it to the ground and trampled it
- none could rescue the ram from its power
- The GOAT
- became very great
- at height of its power the large horn was broken off
- 4 prominent horns grew up toward the 4 winds of heaven
- Out of them came another horn
- it started small
- grew in power to the south, eat and toward the Beautiful Land.
- it grew until it reached the host of the heavens
- it threw some of the starry hosts down earth and trampled them
- it set itself up to be as great as the commander of the army of the Lord
- it took away the daily sacrifice from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down
- Because of rebellion - the Lord's people and the daily sacrifice were given over to it
- it prospered in everything it did
- truth was thrown to the ground
- Then Daniel heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him
- "How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled - the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot of the Lord's people?"
- 2,300 evenings & mornings
- then the sanctuary will be re-consecrated
- The Interpretation of the Vision
- While trying to understand, one who looked like a man stood before Daniel
- Daniel heard a man's voice from the Ulai saying
- "Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision"
- HE (Gabriel)
- came near to where Daniel was standing
- Daniel was terrified and fell prostrate
- Gabriel told Daniel to understand that the vision concerns the time of the end
- Daniel was in a deep sleep, with his face to the ground
- Gabriel touched him and raised him to his feet and said
- I will tell you what will happen - later in the time of wrath
- because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end
- Gabriel interprets....(vs 20)
- The 2 horned Ram = kings of Media & Persia
- The shaggy goat = the king of Greece
- The large horn between its eyes is the first king
- the 4 horns that replace the one that broke off = 4 kingdoms
- that will emerge from his nation but not have the same power
- In the latter part of their reign...
- when rebels are completely wicked
- a fierce looking king ( a master of intrigue) will arise
- he will become very strong, but not by his own power
- he will cause devastation
- he will succeed in whatever he does
- he will destroy those who are might, the holy people
- he will cause deceit to prosper
- he will consider himself superior
- when they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the prince of princes.
- yet, he will be destroyed, but not by human power
- The vision of evening & mornings that has been given you is true
- but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future
- Daniel
- was wornout
- lay exhausted for several days
- then got up and went about the king's business
- he was appalled by the vision
- it was beyond understanding
