Chapter 8 Outline


  1.  Daniel’s Vision of a Ram and a Goat
    1. During 3rd year of King Belshazzar's reign
    2. In vision, Daniel saw himself in the citadel of Susa
      1. in province of Elam
      2. beside the Ulai Canal
    3. he saw a RAM
      1. w/ 2 horns - long horns
        1. one was longer than the other but it grew up later
      2. standing beside the canal
      3. the ram charged toward the west, north and south
      4. no animal could stand against it
      5. none could rescue from it's power
      6. it did as it please
      7. it became great
    4. As thinking about this - he saw a GOAT
      1. suddenly a goat w/ a prominent horn came
        1. the horn was between the eyes
        2. it came from the west
        3. it crossed the whole earth without touching the ground
        4. it came toward the 2 horned ram
          1. and charged it w/ great rage
          2. a furious attack
          3. it shattered the rams 2 horns
    5. The RAM
      1. horns were shattered by the goat
      2. was powerless to stand against goat
      3. goat knocked it to the ground and trampled it
      4. none could rescue the ram from its power
    6. The GOAT
      1. became very great
      2. at height of its power the large horn was broken off
      3. 4 prominent horns grew up toward the 4 winds of heaven
        1. Out of them came another horn
          1. it started small
          2. grew in power to the south, eat and toward the Beautiful Land.
          3. it grew until it reached the host of the heavens
          4. it threw some of the starry hosts down earth and trampled them
          5. it set itself up to be as great as the commander of the army of the Lord
          6. it took away the daily sacrifice from the Lord, and his sanctuary was thrown down
          7. Because of rebellion - the Lord's people and the daily sacrifice were given over to it
          8. it prospered in everything it did
          9. truth was thrown to the ground
    7. Then Daniel heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him
      1. "How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled - the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, the surrender of the sanctuary and the trampling underfoot of the Lord's people?"
        1. 2,300 evenings & mornings
        2. then the sanctuary will be re-consecrated
  2. The Interpretation of the Vision
    1. While trying to understand, one who looked like a man stood before Daniel
    2. Daniel heard a man's voice from the Ulai saying
      1. "Gabriel, tell this man the meaning of the vision"
    3. HE (Gabriel)
      1. came near to where Daniel was standing
      2. Daniel was terrified and fell prostrate
      3. Gabriel told Daniel to understand that the vision concerns the time of the end
      4. Daniel was in a deep sleep, with his face to the ground 
      5. Gabriel touched him and raised him to his feet and said
        1. I will tell you what will happen - later in the time of wrath
          1. because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end
    4. Gabriel interprets....(vs 20)
      1. The 2 horned Ram = kings of Media & Persia
      2. The shaggy goat = the king of Greece
        1. The large horn between its eyes is the first king
        2. the 4 horns that replace the one that broke off = 4 kingdoms
          1. that will emerge from his nation but not have the same power
      3. In the latter part of their reign...
        1. when rebels are completely wicked
        2. a fierce looking king ( a master of intrigue) will arise
          1. he will become very strong, but not by his own power
          2. he will cause devastation
          3. he will succeed in whatever he does
          4. he will destroy those who are might, the holy people
          5. he will cause deceit to prosper
          6. he will consider himself superior
          7. when they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the prince of princes.
          8. yet, he will be destroyed, but not by human power
      4. The vision of evening & mornings that has been given you is true
        1. but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future
  3. Daniel
    1. was wornout
    2. lay exhausted for several days
    3. then got up and went about the king's business
    4. he was appalled by the vision
    5. it was beyond understanding
