Chapter 5 Outline

Chapter 5

  1. The Writing on the Wall
    1. King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles 
    2. While drinking wine, he gave order to bring gold and silver goblets
      1. the ones his father, King Nebuchadnezzar, had taken from the temple in Jerusalem
      2. so they could drink from them
        1. the king, his nobles, his wives and his concubines all drank from them
        2. as they drank they praised the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood & stone
    3. Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appear and wrote on the plaster of the wall
      1. near  the lampstand in the royal palace
      2. the king watched and it wrote
      3. the king turned pale and was so frightened
        1. his legs weak
        2. his knees nocked
    4. The king summoned the enchanters, astrologers and diviners
      1. said whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means
        1. will be clothed in purple
        2. have a gold chain around neck
        3. he will be made 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
    5. Then all the king's wise men came in - but they could not read the writing
    6. The king became more terrified
      1. face grew more pale
      2. his nobles were baffled
    7. The Queen
      1. hearing the voices of king and his nobles came into banquet hall
      2. said don't be alarmed
      3. there is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him
        1. in the time of your father he was found to have
          1. insight
          2. intelligence
          3. wisdom like that of the gods
        2. your father, King N appointed him chief of magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners
          1. because he had a keen mind
          2. knowledge and understanding
          3. and ability to interpret dreams
          4. explain riddles
          5. solve difficult problems
      4. Call for Daniel and he will tell you what the writing means
    8. Daniel 
      1. was brought before the king
        1. the king asked if he was one of the exiles his father brought to Judah?
        2. said "I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight..."
        3. The wise men and enchanters could not read or tell me what it means
        4. If you read this and tell me what it means
          1. you will be clothed in purple
          2. have a gold chain around neck
          3. made 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
      2. Daniel answered
        1. keep your gifts and reward someone else
        2. nevertheless I will ready and tell you what it means
        3. God gave Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor
          1. because of high position all people feared him
          2. those who wanted king put to death, he put to death
          3. those the king wanted spared, were spared
          4. those he wanted to promote, were promoted
          5. those he wanted to humble, he humbled
        4. But - when king became arrogant and full of pride - he was deposed and stripped of his glory
          1. driven away from people and lived like an animal
          2. at grass like an ox
          3. his body was drenched with dew of heaven
          4. all until he acknowledge the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.
        5. But you Belshazzar - his son - have not humbled yourself - though you knew all this.
          1. Instead you have set yourself against the Lord of heaven
          2. You brought goblets from the temple and drank wine from them
          3. you praised the gods of silver, gold bronze, iron, wood & stone
            1. which cannot see, hear or understand.
          4. you did not honor the God who holds your life in his hand
          5. So he sent the hand that wrote on the wall
        6. The inscription was written
          1. MENE,MENE, TEKE, PARSIN
            1. Mene - God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end
            2. Tekel - You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting
            3. Peres - Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians
    9. Belshazzar's command
      1. Then he commanded Daniel be clothed in purpose and a gold chain around neck.
      2. Daniel was proclaimed the 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
      3. that very night Belshazzar was slain
    10. Darius the Mede took over the kingdom - at the age of 62.
