Chapter 5
- The Writing on the Wall
- King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles
- While drinking wine, he gave order to bring gold and silver goblets
- the ones his father, King Nebuchadnezzar, had taken from the temple in Jerusalem
- so they could drink from them
- the king, his nobles, his wives and his concubines all drank from them
- as they drank they praised the gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood & stone
- Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appear and wrote on the plaster of the wall
- near the lampstand in the royal palace
- the king watched and it wrote
- the king turned pale and was so frightened
- his legs weak
- his knees nocked
- The king summoned the enchanters, astrologers and diviners
- said whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means
- will be clothed in purple
- have a gold chain around neck
- he will be made 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
- Then all the king's wise men came in - but they could not read the writing
- The king became more terrified
- face grew more pale
- his nobles were baffled
- The Queen
- hearing the voices of king and his nobles came into banquet hall
- said don't be alarmed
- there is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods in him
- in the time of your father he was found to have
- insight
- intelligence
- wisdom like that of the gods
- your father, King N appointed him chief of magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners
- because he had a keen mind
- knowledge and understanding
- and ability to interpret dreams
- explain riddles
- solve difficult problems
- Call for Daniel and he will tell you what the writing means
- Daniel
- was brought before the king
- the king asked if he was one of the exiles his father brought to Judah?
- said "I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight..."
- The wise men and enchanters could not read or tell me what it means
- If you read this and tell me what it means
- you will be clothed in purple
- have a gold chain around neck
- made 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
- Daniel answered
- keep your gifts and reward someone else
- nevertheless I will ready and tell you what it means
- God gave Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor
- because of high position all people feared him
- those who wanted king put to death, he put to death
- those the king wanted spared, were spared
- those he wanted to promote, were promoted
- those he wanted to humble, he humbled
- But - when king became arrogant and full of pride - he was deposed and stripped of his glory
- driven away from people and lived like an animal
- at grass like an ox
- his body was drenched with dew of heaven
- all until he acknowledge the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.
- But you Belshazzar - his son - have not humbled yourself - though you knew all this.
- Instead you have set yourself against the Lord of heaven
- You brought goblets from the temple and drank wine from them
- you praised the gods of silver, gold bronze, iron, wood & stone
- which cannot see, hear or understand.
- you did not honor the God who holds your life in his hand
- So he sent the hand that wrote on the wall
- The inscription was written
- MENE,MENE, TEKE, PARSIN
- Mene - God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end
- Tekel - You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting
- Peres - Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians
- Belshazzar's command
- Then he commanded Daniel be clothed in purpose and a gold chain around neck.
- Daniel was proclaimed the 3rd highest ruler in the kingdom
- that very night Belshazzar was slain
- Darius the Mede took over the kingdom - at the age of 62.
