Chapter
- King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon
- King Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem during the 3rd year of Jehoiakim king of Judah
- NOTE: Jehoiakim was 18th King of Judah from 609 to 598 BC sp the 3rd year of his reign would be 606 BC?
- The Lord delivered Jehoiakim and some of the articles from the temple of God up to King Nebuchadnezzar. who took them to the treasure house of his god in Babylonia
- King Nebuchadnessar ordered some of the Israelites to be brought into the king's service.
- ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of court officials to bring them
- Description:
- young men with no physical defects
- handsome
- showing aptitude for learning
- well informed
- quick to understand
- qualified to service in king's palace
- He was to teach
- the language
- the literature of the Babylonians
- King Nebuchadnezzar assigned them daily food & wine from the king's table
- Trained for 3 years and then enter king's service
- Chosen included some from Judah - and given new names
- Daniel - Belteshazzar
- Hananiah - Shadrach
- Mishael - Meshach
- Azariah - Abendnego
- Daniel
- resolved not to defile himself w royal food & wine
- asked chief official for permission not to partake
- God caused official to show favor & compassion to Daniel
- official told Daniel he was afraid of king who ordered the food & drink and would see them looking worse then the others.
- Daniel proposed a test
- 10 days of vegetables and water
- then compare appearance to others
- At end of 10 days looked healthier & better nourished so guard let them continue.
- The 4 young men
- God gave knowledge & understanding of all kinds
- Daniel could understand visions & dreams of all kinds
- at the end of the time, they were presented to Nebuchadnezzar
- The king talked w/them and found non equal - so they entered the king's service.
- In every matter of wisdom & understanding they were 10 X better than all the magicians & enchanters in his whole kingdom
- Daniel remained their until the first year of King Cyrus
- Cyrus the Great was king of Babylon 539-530 BC - so this means Daniel was in Babylon until 539 BC?
My time notes - Daniel
606 BC is year taken captive
3 years of training and then chosen into kings service
539 BC is when he was no longer in Babylon - which I think means he died.
- google estimated Daniel lived 620 - 538 BC = 82 years
- so if born in 620 then he was about 14 when he was taken captive?
- finished training at age 17?
- lived in Babylon until he was 82?
