Ishtar Gate

Ishtar Gate was the 8th gate to the inner city of Babylon.

Constructed in 569 BC by order of King Nebuchadnezzar on the north side of the city.

It was part of a grand walled processional way leading into the city.

ORIGINAL STRUCTURE

  • a double gate with a smaller frontal gate and a larger more grand secondary section.
  • Walls were finished in glazed bricks mostly in blue, with animals and deities on them
  • German archaeologist Robert Koldewey led excavation of site from 1904 to 1914
  • After WW1 the smaller frontal gate was reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin
  • Other panels from the gate are located in many other museums around the world

One of the mushussi dragons from the gate.

HISTORY
  • King Nebuchadnezzar ordered the construction of the gate and dedicated it to the Babylonian goddess Ishtar
  • Made of glazed brick with rows of dragons, bulls, lions- symbolizing the gods Marduk, Adad and Ishtar.
OTHER
  • Nebuchadnezzar inscription - honor to the gods
  • Iraq has petitioned German government to return the gate many times - but to no avail.  Debate is an article of such cultural significance is better off in a safer environment than in a country affected by so much war (Iraq).
  • It is used as a prime example in debate of cultural significance

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) has a serpent-dragon panel from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon in its collection:

The panel is a celebrated symbol of Iraqi cultural heritage and one of the DIA's most prized works. It features a Mushhushshu dragon, a protective animal figure that was associated with Marduk, the patron god of Babylon. The Mushhushshu is a divine creature with the head and scales of a snake, the claws of an eagle, the legs of a lion, and a tail ending in a scorpion's stinger

604 BC -  2nd year of King Nebuchadnezzar reign (Daniel 2)

562 BC - end of King Nebuchadnezzar reign as king of Babylon (Daniel 2)

Review this before you go any further.

As we look at the time line, it’s important to note that Daniel began his time in Babylon serving in Nebuchadnezzar’s court but ends up serving under Darius the Mede. The Medo-Persians took over Babylon in 539 BC, which is only explicitly mentioned in Daniel 5:30-31. Here is a simple key of the kings in Daniel:

  1. Nebuchadnezzar – King of Babylon (605–562 BC)

  2. Belshazzar – Grandson of Nebuchadnezzar, Co-Regent of Babylon with his father Nabonidus (553-539 BC)

  3. Darius – Governor of Babylon under Cyrus (~539 – 530 BC)

  4. Cyrus – King of Persia (559 – 530 BC)

Now that we recognize the times of these kings we can put together a chronology of the book. Here’s a simple outline that will help you organize the book chronologically. The dates are approximate as most historians and scholars differ over the exact dates of the respective reigns of the kings.

Now, if we take the outline above and organize it chronologically, the chapters of the book of Daniel unfold in the following way:

  1. Chapter 1 – Refuses King’s Delicacies, 605 BC under Nebuchadnezzar

  2. Chapter 2 – Great Golden Image, 603 BC

  3. Chapter 3 – Golden Stature/Fiery Furnace, 587 BC under Nebuchadnezzar

  4. Chapter 4 – Nebuchadnezzar’s Judgment, 571 – 562 BC

  5. Chapter 7 – Four Beasts, Little Horn, Ancient of Days, 553 BC

  6. Chapter 8 – Ram and the Goat, 551 BC

  7. Chapter 5 – Writing on the Wall, 539 BC

  8. Chapter 9 – Seventy Weeks, 539 BC

  9. Chapter 6 – Lion’s Den, 538~534 BC under Darius

  10. Chapter 10 – 12 – King of the North and King of the South to 1335 days, ~534 BC

In my owns studies I found that as I organized the book chronologically it became easier for me to understand the story line. Hopefully this will serve as a helpful tool for you as you study the Book of Daniel.

Chapters 1 & 2

7/20 we met and did a quick overview of the book and then began to read it together.  We got as far as chapter 2.  Some of the things we discussed were:

  • The timeline
  • Daniel - chapter 13
  • Was Daniel married?
  • King N and his dream - the statue showing history timeline

Chapter 12 Outline

 Chapter 12

DANIEL 12

The End Times
1“At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 4But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
5Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. 6One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?”
7The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
8I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?”
9He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
11“From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.
13“As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.”
